The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the Bible's Old Testament brought troubles to the world. I find that the image of a horse, rather than that of a man, is more expressive and frightening in this context. Note the squashed human figures beneath the hooves or within the eyes of the horses. |

His hooves are clamped firmly on the earth. The legs are starvation thin. The eyes glare, nostrils flare and teeth are bared to bite. Two hapless humans are transfixed in his eyes.
Malaria, typhus, tuberculosis and, by implication, all the diseases known to man follow in his wake.
But there is an element of restraint. The upper part of the torso, standing on thin diseased legs, headless, can be seen to have human arms reaching forward to hold back the awful horses head, Perhaps we can cure the ills before too late! |

The Green Horse is the one to look out for - a twisted macabre sense of humour, the irony of fate.
He is laughing as he descends upon mankind.
The reflections of squashed prey within his hooves; eyes a-glint with mockery and evil intent. |

The White Horse brought blindness and all physical afflictions. Not only blind in a direct sense but also visited physical afflictions upon humans for no rhyme or reason. Relentlessly, apparently purposelessly, and mercilessly. |
