Llanddwyn Island is a wonderfully beautiful and peaceful small isle just off the coast of Anglesey near Newborough. It contains the ruins of a monastry, a short row of old coastguard cottages now small museums showing what the interiors used to be like; two lighthouses, one still in use and two old lifeboat houses.

You can walk to it except at exceptionally high tides. Nobody lives there now but the wild life is abundant. It is my most favourite place in the whole world.

Here are just a few aspects . . . . . and I am sure I will be adding more as time goes by.

Santes Dwynwen, Welsh patron saint of Lovers.

                  'Santes Dwynwen'

The Welsh patron saint of lovers.

The figure is based on the shape of a broken shell.

Princess Dwynwen was jilted by her betrothed Prince and retreated to Ynys (island) Llanddwyn where she founded a nunnery and, in time, became the Welsh patron saint of lovers equivalent to the English (Sais) St Valentine.

There is a well on the island into which you should throw a handkerchief or similar token and make your wish.

Santes Dwynwen and monk

          'Santes Dwynwen and monk.'

Broken shells, many of which can be found on the island, form the figures in this painting of Santas Dwynwen and one of the monks who built and lived in the monastery whose ruins also appear in the painting as does one of the two celtic crosses also to be found on the island.

Abstract paintings from these Celtic Crosses can be found in the 'North Wales' selection of paintings on this web-site
